Dahab: Project Tire(d)

In a continuous effort to serve our community and to serve our seas, Ghost Diving Egypt kicked off the year by spending two days recovering 34 tires that had been dumped just off the reef at one of our beloved local dive sites here in Dahab. And this is only the beginning.

Throughout the years, many experiments have been done to determine which (if any) man-made substances make for the best artificial reefs. It’s been proven time and again that vehicle tires are the least helpful and one of the most damaging.

I’m Tire(d) of swimming in a plastic ocean
I’m Tire(d) of lost or discarded fishing gear killing marine life
I’m Tire(d) of mankind using our seas as a dumping ground
Project Tire(d)

...is our first project of 2021.

Project Tire(d) is ongoing as it will take several more dives before the area is cleared of all discarded tires. Keep an eye on this page as we will be sharing regular updates on our current mission and will also give you a look behind the scenes to showcase what it takes to tackle a large-scale project such as this. While Ghost Diving Egypt's main focus is on the recovery of ghost fishing gear, we are happy to lend our expertise to rid the seas of any and all marine debris that presents a threat to our local reef ecosystems.

We would like to extend a special thanks to all our volunteer divers and support team who contributed and donated their time and efforts to Project Tire(d) thus far:

Our freedivers and surface support team: Mohamed Wahbi, Nicki Meharg, Nanna Kreutzmann, Stella Anita, Ahmed
