Three tons of fish farm nets recovered in Patroklos Greece
December 2021 brought us again to Patroklos, a small island in the Attica region. The island has great historical and archeological value and belongs to the NATURA 2000 Network of Protected Areas.
We started projects there back in 2016 with Ghost Diving Greece because there are many many fish farm nets abandoned on the seafloor. The fish farm nets are made of nylon and are perfect for regeneration, together with other nylon waste, into ECONYL® yarn, the basis for new sustainable products such as socks, swimwear, accessories and carpets.
On December 2nd and 5th, Dutch and British divers from Ghost Diving UK joined the Greek team and thanks to the soaring team spirit managed to remove 3 tons of ghost nets in just 2 60 minute dives! Local fishers were mobilised and helped us with their boat to carry the nets from the surface to the collection point in Lavrio.
Since 2017, we have been collaborating with Healthy Seas partner and fishing startup Enaleia who is running the net collection points and actively supporting marine pollution prevention activities with fishers in Greece and Italy.
