British team helping in heritage project
British North East GUE “Ghost Divers” have recently been targeting shipwrecks along the coastline between Newcastle upon Tyne and Stock upon Tees. This area has just been awarded National Lottery Heritage Funding to explore hidden heritage within the area. One of the many projects being funded is Beneath the Waves, which will target shipwrecks and use modern survey techniques such as photogrammetry to model and present these shipwrecks to individuals that may have limited access to the sea.
They helped with the heritage project by targeting and clearing shipwrecks of ghost equipment so they are ready to be modelled. They practiced their photogrammetry skills on ghost gear, creating highly detailed images that can be used to safely lift ghost gear from the shipwrecks. We will also participate in the Beneath the Waves project and will volunteer our time to model as many shipwrecks as possible.
Whilst the end of the season may be upon us here in the North East, we will be using the winter months to practice our photogrammetry skills and team building to hit the ground running next season.
Please visit Explore Seascapes for more information on the heritage project.
